I stumbled across a great quote by the actor Hugh Laurie the other day. Am I the only one who instantly thinks of the robber duo, Jasper and Horris from 101 Dalmatians when they see Hugh Laurie..?!
Anyway, when I’m not thinking about 101 Dalmatians I do think that his quote really sums up why I’m taking a leap and throwing myself into 12 challenges.
“It's a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you're ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.”
Although I’ve got a lot of training to do between now and completing my 12th challenge, I’m not sure I’ll ever feel 100% 'ready' for any of them. I don’t think you can ever be ready to push yourself outside your comfort zone. If you could, you’ll probably find you're still in it!
Sure, you can train hard and prepare yourself both physically and mentally but I think there comes a point when you have to stop readying yourself and just do it. Whatever ‘it’ is.
So why wait?
I've come to the conclusion that if I waited until I was fully ready I would probably never ever do anything. Even if I don’t succeed I’ll learn a lot more by trying than I would if I carried on preparing or procrastinating. Hopefully it won’t matter that I don’t necessarily start with all the pieces of the puzzle, I’ll pick them up as I go and learn along the way.
Now is a good a time as any.
In fact, now is a great time. The hardest part to all this is probably getting started, so sitting still won’t make it any easier. Don’t buy time with excuses. You’ll never know if you’re ready until you give it a go, you may surprise yourself. Get up and take the first step towards doing whatever it is you’re been putting off. Take a leap of faith. Why wait?
Remember, she who dares, wins.
